Attempting to install PCE with SQL Express 2005 generates an error message when trying to create the new database.

Problem - The installation of PCE software when using SQL Express 2005 Edition to host the database generates the following error during the installation process.

Solution

This problem is caused by the 'named pipes' and 'TCP/IP' features of SQL Express 2005 beinng disabled during a default installation of SQL Express 2005. This software is designed to have a 'small footprint' and so certain features are only enabled when required. PCE software requires these features and so they must be enabled for a successful PCE installation.

Use the following steps to enable the required features of SQL Express 2005.

NOTE: you can apply the following whilst actually at the SQL configuration page during the PCE Server installation.  Once this SQL protocol configuration has been applied you can proceed with installation without needing to restart the process.

1. Go to Start, Programs, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Configuration Tools, SQL Server Configuration Manager:

2. Expand SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration and select Protocols for SQLEXPRESS:

3. Right click on Named Pipes and set to Enable.  Now repeat for TCP/IP:

4. Now select SQL Server 2005 Services.  Then right click on SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) and choose Restart.

5. You can now close the SQL Server Configuration Manager and continue with the installation of PCE Server.
